William Flynn Society

The William Flynn Society website showcases decades of research and analysis of the celebrated golf course architect William S. Flynn by Wayne Morrison. The site includes hundreds of historic aerial photographs, architectural plans, and scorecards from Flynn-designed courses including Shinnecock Hills, Meron’s East Course, and The Country Club at Brookline.

Long before giant bulldozers and bigger budgets allowed the moving of significant quantities of earth to shape the land to the architect’s vision, William Flynn utilized what nature provided, creating unique site-specific hole designs. When he elected to enhance strategy or provide drainage, he did so in ways that mimicked nature, resulting in reduced maintenance expenses. Unlike many early architects, Flynn chose to hide much of his work by making his architectural constructs appear natural. He referred to himself as the “Nature Faker,” a moniker that inspired the name of his biography. His philosophy was simple yet profound: by working with the land rather than against it, he created courses that are in harmony with their surroundings.

The website consists of public informational pages and a members-only access area. The members section of the website includes access to the hundreds of historic photographs, the current PDF version of Morrison’s book “The Nature Faker”, members newsletter, and access to register for private play at Flynn-designed courses.
